words worth sharing

You know when you read something so good it lingers in your mind and you find yourself going back to read, reread and then read it again? Is there anything better? This did it for me (found via).  So blunt and so beautiful. The author was asked by a reader to share advice she would give to her self twenty years back, my favorite excerpts below.

There are some things you can’t understand yet. Your life will be a great and continuous unfolding. It’s good you’ve worked hard to resolve childhood issues while in your twenties, but understand that what you resolve will need to be resolved again. And again. You will come to know things that can only be known with the wisdom of age and the grace of years. Most of those things will have to do with forgiveness.
Don’t lament so much about how your career is going to turn out. You don’t have a career. You have a life. Do the work. Keep the faith. Be true blue.
You cannot convince people to love you. This is an absolute rule. No one will ever give you love because you want him or her to give it. Real love moves freely in both directions. Don’t waste your time on anything else.
Your assumptions about the lives of others are in direct relation to your naïve pomposity. Many people you believe to be rich are not rich. Many people you think have it easy worked hard for what they got. Many people who seem to be gliding right along have suffered and are suffering. Many people who appear to you to be old and stupidly saddled down with kids and cars and houses were once every bit as hip and pompous as you.

happy birthday to my favorite guy

Preston jacob - you are twenty four! Happy birthday my sweet guy!
How did I get so lucky to end up with you? Doesn't it feel like yesterday that you were twenty one outside of my college apartments as I played 20 questions with you. So happy you got all the right answers and I was able to kiss you for the first time.
Thank you for being my best friend, my motivator, supporter, partner in crime - my everything!
Do you know how exciting it is to know that i get to spend all of your future birthdays with you? SO exciting. It brings a smile to my face just thinking about it.

Thank you for being born.

With all my love, Morgan

enjoying the mess

It doesn't happen often, but sometimes, I like a messy house. I like the mittens and ear muffs thrown on the counter, craft supplies spread over the bed, dirty ready-to-be-washed clothes sitting patiently in the wash. It means we've been busy living. Watching Sebastian run circles in the snow, soaking in the fire, lounging in p's flannel shirt - all of that was more important than cleaning. Today, I lay my type-A, unable to sit down if there is a single dish in the sink or blanket unfolded tendencies to rest and enjoy the mess.

many thanks to 2011

2011 was joyful, sad, exciting, hard, wonderful - it was everything.  Here are some of our highlights...

The beginning of January was exciting for us. We were newly engaged starting our first year as college graduates and right in the midst of our move to San Diego. Life was bliss. But then God threw a curve ball, and I found out that my father had unexpectedly passed away. I shared some of my feelings here, but didn't (and still don't) have all the words. I made an impromptu trip to Montana to figure out logistics and bid farewell and then a trip to Seattle for many needed hugs from my family. It was a hard month. We completed our move to San Diego, into a beautiful little one bedroom apartment and celebrated the birthday of the best guy I know.

We settled into and explored our new home and started a new phase of our life. I did my best to love the new city, as much as my heart ached.  I cherished having Preston near me for lots of hugs and support and doted on Sebastian every chance I had.

I decorated on a shoe string budget, tried new restaurants and loved on Sebastian despite his issues.

Lauren came to visit, we celebrated Easter and started the countdown for our many other spring and summer visitors!

We took long walks in the warm weather, played with my sweet sister and family, had fun-filled weekends and celebrated Memorial Day.

A little circus action, many Padres games, celebrated Hannah's high school graduation, attended a beautiful wedding, and at the end of the day felt pretty blessed for all life has provided.

We soaked in the San Diego sun, had dates with friends and the California coast,  started planning our next big step, savored time with my sweet nephews and parents, attempted another puppy, and enjoyed time with P's family celebrating my birthday.

We vacationed in Seattle and decided quickly thereafter to move sooner than later if our plans worked out! Also wished a happy birthday to the sweetest momma, attended another beautiful wedding and celebrated one year until our big day. We were also blessed to later that month accept job offers with the great companies we work with today.

We packed up and headed North! It was as busy as could be, moving into our new home, starting our new jobs and for the second time in a year settling into life in a new city. My heart was overjoyed to be near family and Preston was a trooper for putting up with my hundreds of plans.

Cherished our engagement photos, and the month in general. Can't forget Halloween!

Did a lot of loving on my sweet niece, traveled to New York for work, soaked in the colors of my favorite season, and enjoyed an amazing Thanksgiving with my family.

Wrapped presents, sipped hot chocolate, decorated, spent time with family and forgot to blog about most of it. Oops. :) Cheers to an amazing 2012!

a lesson from me on patience and compromise

We went and looked at houses last night, eek! Before we continue, let me explain. We don't want to buy right now. Noooo. We want to research, save and plan for buying a house right now and then in late summer when we will get a little more serious, we'll move forward with the buying process. But in the mean time, what better way to get motivated than to do a little browsing?

Preston and I have completely different styles, which is fun because it makes the excitement of finding things we both like that much better. It's also great (super hard) because it encourages (forces) me to work on my patience and compromising skills. Those skills do not come naturally to me but man am I trying! The typical cycle works a little like this: me being blunt, assertive and inpatient,  followed by me slowly realizing there were better ways to approach the situation, followed by me apologizing. Ha! Is anybody else in this same boat?

With that said, I absolutely do love house shopping. And it is fun doing our budgeting and planning as we are both pretty goal minded. It's also fun to think about the next five, ten years and where we may be and what we may be doing. So far the best thing I've learned is that we don't need it all right now.

A few nights ago, I had an awesome talk with my sister, who is reading Financial Peace by Dave Ramsey. We talked about how so often we think that the first time we're buying a house or car or anything really, we think that we 'need' to have the same quality of things we've grown up with. But spacious houses, nice cars, great vacations - those took our parents years to save for! It didn't happen overnight. And it won't for us either. I like that, and I like cherishing the things that we do have right now. Our tiny little condo, time spent together, perhaps the most exciting and fun filled year  ahead of us; I want to cherish it all, embrace each little thing, not get caught in the wants. So while we look and plan, I will let myself get excited for what's ahead, but not caught up in needing it all.

And the title? Some serious sarcasm. I can give no one lessons on patience. All tips for me on patience, compromising and house hunting are welcomed with open arms though. :)

a few memories from the end of 2011

How behind am I? We've been in 2012 for nine days and I'm just getting around to posting these. The end of 2011 was perfect. It was surprisingly relaxed, we seem to have saved many of the typical December events for this month - both of our work holiday parties, more friends visiting and wedding prep! Here are some of our fun, end of the year moments...

(one) seriously cute in those ear muffs, a gift from my momma
(two) go seahawks
(three) i love america
(four) how did two years change that little baby

holiday catch up

The holidays have come and gone, we are approaching mid January and I have yet to upload or any photos from the past month! Terrible, I know. Christmas was wonderful and crazy, just how I like it. There were shrieks of excitement from the little ones, a house full of torn wrapping paper and some serious game play between my siblings and I. A handful of Instagram photos is all I have to show for it, and I'm okay with that. I was savoring each moment with the people I love - and it was perfect.

(one) on the way to christmas morning at my sweet momma's
(two) arianna skateboarding through my legs
(three) seagulls on the seattle waterfront
(four) my mini me niece and our favorite goofy face
(five) sebastian loves his mimi (my momma)
(six) he loves me too!
(seven) my office holiday party this weekend
(eight) rainy Seattle nights - my favorite
(nine) sebastian has learned to put himself to bed early to avoid getting the couch
