Four Months of Samuel

The past month with my precious boy has been so much fun. He is the most smiley, talkative, outgoing baby I have ever met. He absolutely loves flashing his big grin at people (especially babies and kids - he adores them). He talks and babbles all of the time, even while he is nursing and when he wakes up in the middle of the night for diaper changes. He is without a doubt my social butterfly and I love watching his personality emerge more and more everyday.

Four month old Samuel loves...
-His parents (He is still my little velcro baby and I not-so-secretly love it. I hope you love me this much always buddy!)
-Smiling, cooing and giggling all the time! He is so a happy baby and sooo interactive. He will talk to anybody who will listen but I think his conversations with his dad are his favorite.
-When mom sings songs (he is the only person in the world who appreciates my voice ;)
-Swimming lessons - he loves them and is doing such a great job, his instructor comments often about how strong he is.
-Playing with friends - he really loves other babies and friends. In his swim classes he gets so excited when there are other babies there and can't help but smile at them the whole time, it is pretty darn cute!
 -Library story time
-Bathtime with mom
-Sucking his hands and putting absolutely everything in his mouth (pretty sure he is teething because he also drools soon much)
-TOYS! I had no idea he would be so interested in toys so early but he loves his bright, loud toys and it is so fun to watch him play with them.

Dislikes: Sleeping ;) And having to wait at all when he is hungry, tired or wants his mama - little man definitely inherited a bit of my feistiness and while he is happy 95% of the time he will definitely let you know when he is not!

Stats: Will update after his doctor appointment this week!

Eating: Still eating around the clock! We're still every two hours during the day and then at night he will do a 5 hours stretch and then every two hours from there. He has been sooo much more interested in everything that he will talk while nursing, pop up look around about 5 times per feeding (or sometimes pop up off, babble/ smile to me and then be ready to eat again). He cracks me up!

Personality: SO. MUCH. FUN. Samuel is such a social, happy, talkative boy with a BIG personality. He wakes up happy and our day always starts with the three of us in bed talking and SJ giving us big, gummy grin. He is interested in everything lately - especially bright lights and things that flash. Like I said above, he is happy most of the time, but when he isn't he will let you know. Little man has a bit of a temper and as my sweet mom put it, 'he may not be the most patient baby...'. Ha!

Sleeping: I'm not even sure I remember what sleep is anymore ;). In the beginning of the month we actually were in a really good rhythm. Samuel was sleeping 12 hours and waking up to eat twice which was awesome. Then, the four month sleep regression started a bit early and things got rough for a little while. Up at least every two hours, struggling to go back to sleep, etc. Fortunately we are starting to get back in our groove (I hope!!) and things are looking better, but no matter how many times he wakes up our little guy always wakes up full of smiles and ready for snuggles in the morning so I can't complain too much (though the bags under my eyes may beg to differ ;). Also, he's moved to sleeping in the bassinet next to our bed full time - I loved having him sleep with me but he gets such better rest in his Dock A Tot in the bassinet so that is where he is now. :)

Parents: We are still doing awesome! Definitely tired, but still great. :) I started work back part time this month and am so incredibly thankful to be able to work from home. We have a sweet babysitter who comes to the house to help with Samuel but fortunately I can still feed, cuddle and love on him - there is no way I would be able to leave him so I will forever be thankful that I have a job that gives me the flexibility to work from home. I have had so much fun meeting other mommas and keeping busy with Samuel - we go to Stroller Strides 3-4 times a week, swimming lessons, library story time, etc. I've said it before and I will say it again, I knew I would love being Samuel's mom but it is truly so much sweeter than my greatest expectations.

Thanksgiving 2016

Samuel's first Thanksgiving was so much fun!!! It was our second year hosting, but fortunately we have our sweet parents, my two sisters and our friends Tyler and Marissa who all bring so many dishes that we only have to do the fun parts - set the table and make the turkeys! It was an absolutely beautiful day, so Samuel and I started the morning off with a walk through the neighborhood where we got to see Preston playing in the annual Thanksgiving bowl. When we came home, we started the turkeys in the Traeger and got ready to play!

It really was such a great day and I couldn't be any more thankful for my sweet family. Last year on Thanksgiving I woke up with sore boobs and a strong feeling that I was pregnant. It was too early to take a pregnancy test but I hoped and prayed that I was right. To wake up this year to precious Samuel's smile and snuggles felt surreal. He brings so much joy to our lives and I regularly have to pinch myself that this is real life. He is such a little blessing and being able to celebrate Thanksgiving wth him, surrounded by family and friends was wonderful.

(Also, as I got ready to post this I prepared the most delicious bowl of Thanksgiving leftovers. Mashed sweet potatoes, green beans and turkey with the perfect amount of cranberry sauce and raspberry compote drizzled on top. As I prepared to bring it over to the couch, I somehow dropped it and it splattered ALL OVER the floor, my new Magnolia Market rug, the curtains, wall, French doors, ceiling and Preston's heads - no exaggeration. Easily one of my clumsiest moments ever!! Preston was gracious enough to help me clean it up but I will not be living this one down for a lonnnnnng time.)

Samuel's Three Month Photos

While we were in Seattle last week, we got to have our family photos taken by the AMAZING Nikki (and see her absolutely beautiful home she just finished building!). She has a way of making our little family feel sooo comfortable and I will always treasure these moments she was able to capture.

Three Months of Samuel Jacob

This month has been so, so much fun. Samuel is the smiliest, silliest baby of all time. He is incredibly social and loves to be surrounded by people at all time, especially his mama. He is my little velcro baby and goes with me everywhere! This has been a busy month for us and we have had a ton of firsts for Samuel.

Likes: 3 month old Samuel loves snuggles with his mama, bath time, morning talks with dad, the mirror (he LOVES the mirror - the conversations he has with himself are endless), standing up support (with our hands supporting him of course), being worn in the Solly wrap, his sunglasses, nursing (like Preston says, he would live his life attached to a boob if he could).

Dislikes: Being separated from mom, being burped before he is finished eating, naps (he can fight sleep like no other!), being in the car without somebody entertaining him.

Stats: 24.5 inches and 14.9 lbs (He has grown SO much the last few weeks - he gained a full lb one week!)

Eating: Loooooves to eat. We still feed on demand so I don't pay to much attention to timing but we are probably right around every two hours during the day still. I think the biggest change is that he is a much more efficient eater, so now instead of a full feeding taking 40 minutes we are done in half of that.

Sleeping: In general, much better. Aside from one rough week Samuel has been going down around 7:30, doing a four hour stretch and then doing every two hours after that. Naps on the other hand are not anywhere near as predictable. His morning nap is the only consistent nap of the day, and we get that one at our stroller exercise class (I know how cheesy that sounds but it really is a great workout!) or on a walk. Besides that, Samuel tends to catnap and will fight going down for real naps.

Firsts: Oh man so many! First road trip and hotel stay (to Dallas so dad could go to a cowboy game) - Samuel did great! First swimming lesson, which was so cute, he enjoyed it but was a bit taken aback by the big pool and all of the activity. He also had his first plane flight the day before he turned 3 months old and did amazing. It was a four hour flight to Seattle and while he only slept for about 30 minutes of it he was happy the whole time! Voted in his first election (or accompanied me to vote at least). As soon as I entered in my voter access code, Samuel had a verrrrry loud bowel movement which definitely earned us some looks from the other sweet voters - sorry, fine citizens of Travis county!

Mood: So, so happy! He is the smiliest, happiest baby boy I have ever met. He gives smiles out freely and is such a little ham. I truly cannot get over how much fun he is. He is happy about 95% of the time, but when he is hungry, tired or wants mom - he is not afraid to pout his lip and/ or scream! He definitely inherited a bit of his mama's feistiness. ;)

Parents: We are doing great! This has definitely been our favorite month. I absolutely get nostalgic already that my little baby is growing up so fast, but he continues to get so fun and sweet that I can't complain. We are in much more of a rhythm and I feel so much more comfortable taking Samuel out and about which has been wonderful. We are truly so, so in love with our little man, I can't believe we ever lived without him!

Samuel's First Halloween

Samuel has officially celebrated his very first halloween! We decided about six weeks ago that he would be a lion after he developed an infatuation with the lion picture on his bouncer. He will stare, talk and laugh at that lion and it is so sweet - especially since it is the only toy or seat he enjoys being in! In true baby fashion, Samuel fought his naps all day long and then crashed in his stroller as soon as we set our to do trick or treating with the family. (If you are wondering why a 12 week old needs to go trick or treating, it's because he has two sugar loving parents - no judging.)

It was the first holiday that we've had Samuel here and word's can't explain how much more fun it was to celebrate. I can't wait for the rest of the year to show this little man the joyfulness of Thanksgiving and magic of Christmas!

Two Months of Samuel Jacob

As of October 4th, we have a two month old on our hands! The second month of Samuel's life has been so much fun. The first month we stayed pretty close to home, but this month we ventured out and experienced a lot of firsts for Samuel. He is such a fun little man and I love seeing his big personality come through more and more every day. Here are some of the highlights of his second month...

-Samuel rolled over for the first time at 4.5 weeks! Preston was doing tummy time with him and called me over and sure enough he rolled from his belly to his back. He definitely wasn't aware of what he was doing and has only done it a few times since but regardless we are impressed with him! He continues to hold his head up really well and is getting stronger by the day.

-He is suuuuch a happy baby. This month he has been flashing his big gummy smile and talking to us all of the time. He coos and loves when we get in conversations with him - I have a feeling I am going to have quite a social, talkative little man on my hands pretty soon here! He is definitely still my little velcro baby - we spend most of the day with him in my arms or me wearing him in my Solly. He doesn't love to be set down, but does have one toy that he likes: not his piano activity mat, not the Mamaroo, nope, his one toy he loves is the $20 Fisher Price bouncer I got him on a whim from Target. It has a lion toy on it that he will stare at and smile at, it is the sweetest thing!

-We have been out and about a ton lately. Samuel loves it too! He has had many trips to Trader Joe's, Costco, Target, coffee shops, sushi, etc and is almost always as happy as can be and then takes a great nap while we are out. Nap time goes so, so much smoother when we are out than when we are home.

-Samuel is definitely a morning person just like his mama. Most days he wakes up smiling and is ready to have long talks and snuggles with Preston and I. Occasionally he will be ready to start his day at 4 a.m. which is a little too early for this lady. :)

-Speaking of which, sleep for Samuel is... interesting. :) You know all of those Facebook posts of babies sleeping through the night at two weeks old? Yeah, that is so not us. It is to be expected - most breastfed babies need to eat during the night at this age! I make sure Samuel gets to bed early (if he gets overtired it is not pretty) and generally he falls asleep really easy. He'll then do a four hour stretch of sleep which is GLORIOUS. The second half of the night is much more unpredictable, most often he is up every two hours from that point. As long as I get the one four hour stretch I feel great. On days when it is every two hours all night the next day is rough (aka I am an emotional, tired mess). His favorite place to sleep is still on his mama, though he does tolerate the Rock N Play or Dock A Tot for a couple of hours. Praise the Lord for coffee!

-Schedule wise we are on demand and it works great for us. As much of a schedule person as I am, my view on babies is that when they are this little following their queues and eating/ taking naps as needed is the best and healthiest option. Some days Samuel eats every 3 hours, some days he is eating every 90 minutes and that is just fine. I have read books, blogs, and talked to many fellow parents and while I absolutely understand the benefits of having a set schedule it is something we will have plenty of time for later on. The only exception is bed time like I mentioned above - we have noticed the BIGGEST difference in Samuel's ability to fall asleep and stay asleep (as well as his overall mood) when he goes to bed early so we make sure to start our bedtime routine at 7:30 every night. Yes, it is early, but honestly it is sooo worth it so he gets sleep (and we get as much as possible too).

-Mom and dad are doing great. We got to go on our first post baby date thanks to Mimi watching Samuel and we had such an awesome time (and I didn't cry leaving Samuel and managed to only text my mom a few times during date. :) I've also been able to do some workouts since getting cleared at my 6 week postpartum appointment - it feels wonderful to get moving again!

-I think Samuel's favorite daily activity is our walks. Him and I do a morning walk everyday, and when we're lucky he falls asleep and that is his first nap of the day. We do a walk with dad after dinner when the weather finally cools down, Samuel is normally pretty alert and tries to take everything in!

-Samuel got to go to his first pumpkin patch! It was our second annual trip to Sweet Berry Farms and he did such a great job. It was our first longer drive with him (about 80 minutes) and he did great and then slept the whole time we were there (which made it pretty relaxing for me - thanks Samuel!). I may have gone a little nuts on pumpkins, but decorating for the holidays is way too much fun when you have a kid (even if he is too little to appreciate any of it!).

-Eating wise Samuel continues to be one hungry boy! He nurses often and this mama loves having that bonding time with him. He does have a sensitive stomach, and after some continuous symptoms (I have never thought I would be googling poop as much as I have the best month) I have cut out dairy, soy, eggs and peanuts which seem to be the main culprits. It has definitely switched up my diet and I am still figuring out ways to replace my normal meals and snacks but it it is 100% worth it for my little guy!

-He continues to get cuter and cuter by the day - and still looks exactly like his dad! We have had everybody from his pediatrician to my midwife to the housecleaner to neighbors comment on how much they look alike which is so sweet. So far Samuel still has my blue eyes (and my lips) so at least I got a little something in there ;). I must tell Preston a thousand times a day that I can't believe we made something quite so stinking cute and perfect. Preston has had a lot of fun bonding with Samuel this last month as he continues to become more and more interactive (the first month SJ and I were pretty much bonded at the hip so P didn't feel quite as close with him).

I couldn't imagine a sweeter boy in the whole world and I will never be able to say just how much I love motherhood. Samuel, it is such a joy and an honor to raise you and I can't wait for a million more memories with you my precious boy.
