11 Months of Our Sweet Samuel

I've had a hard time typing this one out because it is my last update until my big boy turns ONE. How did this happen?! I can still picture his little newborn hands curling around my finger. I still remember what his kicks feel like inside my belly!! Truthfully though, as bittersweet as it is, I am so thankful for every day I get to spend with Samuel. There have been several things this month that have reminded me that a healthy baby is not a guarantee and that you truly never know how many days we have. It is scary to think that, but it helps but things in perspective - even on days when my patience is fleeting and I am tired to the bone I can't help but delight in Samuel's big hugs and soak in his sweetness. There is nothing in the world more precious than being a mom to my wild, joyful Sammy J.

11 Month Old Samuel Likes...

Clapping! He claps all the time and it is so precious. Lately he has been really into clapping for himself after every bite of food he takes which is pretty hysterical, no self-confidence issues here. ;)

Lyla. He gets so excited in the morning when we come downstairs and he gets to see our pup!

His cousins. Samuel is over the moon in love with his cousins Ari and Remy. He goes absolutely crazy when he sees them - which thanks to summer break has been a lot more lately! They are so good with him and it makes my heart explode seeing the fun those three have together (and also makes me a little teary eyed - I remember both of them at Samuel's age so clearly and now they are huge, time goes so fast!!).

The Toilet/ Garbage Can/ Pressing Buttons on the Washing Machine/ Pulling Things Off of Pantry Shelves. Like any curious almost one year old, Samuel is absolutely in love with anything that he shouldn't be into. :) I love how curious he is and want to encourage him but we of course have off limit things (china buffet and electrical outlets) and it is a full time job trying to keep our little man away from those!

Reading. This month Samuel got really into reading books and it has been SO fun. I'm a huge reader and, while it is still early, it is so wonderful to see Samuel share that love! Our favorite books are Wherever You Are My Love Will Find You, San Francisco ABCs, London Opposites, Pat the Bunny and God Bless You and Goodnight (Preston reads this to Samuel before bath most nights at it is the sweetest).

11 Month Old Samuel dislikes diaper changes, outfit changes and having his face cleaned after he eats. That about sums it up. ;)

Stats: Somewhere north of 25 lbs. We used two different scales a couple of days apart and got different readings so we will have to wait for his 1 year appt to get an accurate reading. :) One things for sure, this boy is BIG. He is in 2T clothing for the most part, I squeezed him into a few 18 month outfits for pictures this month and I think I may have cut off his thigh circulation ;) Sorry bud!

Eating: Nursing several times a day (and we hope to continue for a good long while!) and eats three meals and occasionally a snack as well. The last week or so we started to experience a little of the toddler eating antics where Samuel wanted to share some of his food with Lyla, play with it, etc. He only wants to feed himself now, which I love however I am struggling with how to get his vitamins in him since I previously mixed them in his mashes. I try to sneak a spoonful in here and there to get them in him. I don't think I've ever written it here, but we do a probiotic, cod liver oil and food based multivitamin powder for supplements. For food, we've continued to do stick with our go-tos and add in new foods as we eat them. Samuel eats a variation of what we eat, so most days it is avocado and egg yolk for breakfast, leftovers or pre-made soup or custard for lunch and poultry, red meat or seafood plus veggies for dinner.  I tried a couple of bites of raw cheese to see how his belly did the dairy and he was so funny with his reaction - definitely a new taste and texture that he was not quite sure about! I've mentioned it before, but I really do love trying new recipes and making healthy meals for Samuel and Preston and I. Eating good quality, healthy, traditional foods is something I really believe in and I love being able to nourish my growing my boy this way.

Sleeping: We had two weeks of rough sleep while Samuel cut his seventh and eighth tooth. He seems to be pretty consistent with the week he cuts a new tooth he is up every couple of hours through the night. As soon as those were in he was back to sleeping 12 hours with waking up once to eat - hallelujah! Still takes two naps between 60-90 minutes long most days.

Personality: HYSTERICAL. This boy has us laughing so hard. He definitely likes to make people smile and laugh and will do anything for a smile or a giggle. He has the funniest faces and is quite the social, talkative boy. He prefers playing one on one or with a couple of other kids vs a big group (in playgroups or activities with several kids, he definitely sticks closer to me and isn't as bubbly as he is in smaller settings). He is very determined and 100% has a stubborn streak - just like his mama. ;) I love watching his personality continue to emerge and am so thankful this little man is mine.

Firsts: Oh my, this month feels like it has been explosive in terms of development and firsts. Samuel is very into having conversations now and loves to say 'hi' while waving over and over (cutest thing ever). He also loves to clap (he has been doing this for awhile but lately he seems to do it at the right times - like when we say 'yay', etc) and has been mimicking sounds and words (he said Ari the other day after I called for her). He can understand simple requests like 'hand the washcloth to mom' and is able to do them - it is so amazing how early babies can understand things! We went on our annual staycation to Lost Pines and Samuel got to ride his first bike and sit on a longhorn! He also got his first haircut (queue the mama tears!). I held off as long as I could but we were spending so much time in the bathtub combing out tangles that I knew it was time. He did such a great job and instantly looked like a toddler when we were done. And probably the biggest first is Samuel got his first puppy! He adores Lyla and it has been so fun watching them play together and get to know each other.r

Welcome to the Family, Lyla Girl!

In June, we welcomed our newest family member - Lyla, the sheepadoodle! We are already so in love with her and she is proving to be the sweetest, goofiest, smart, stubborn addition to our family - she fits right in! ;) Samuel is absolutely in love with her and Lyla does an amazing job of dealing with his rather aggressive petting/ tugging. We are in the thick of puppy training right now - out to potty in the backyard every 30 minutes, teething, etc but aside from the times that Preston has had to travel it is going amazing (the few days here and there where he has been gone were a bit rough!). Overall it feels so good to have a pup in the house again!!

10 Months of our sweet Samuel

I really don't think there is anything in the world better than a 10 month old baby. This month with Samuel has been so fun and he has Preston and I dying laughing every day. He is such a little ham, constantly making the most hilarious faces to get us to laugh. I am truly so grateful I get to be Samuel's mama and couldn't love this time as a family of three anymore.

10 month old Samuel loves...

Making funny faces! Seriously, from the time I pick him up out of his crib in the morning he starts doing the goofiest faces to get me to laugh. It is the absolute funniest/ sweetest thing I have ever seen.

Moving everywhere, climbing up on everything and opening any and all cabinets (and anything else he can get into...) Little man is fast and loves having free reign of the house to move all over the place!

Building towers/ chasing things. We spend most of our playtime building towers out of wooden blocks and recycled containers (which are Samuel's very favorite toys).

Balls! We also do a lot of ball rolling back and forth, especially first thing in the morning when we have our quiet playtime downstairs.

Being outside. He is still my trusty little sidekick on walks and workouts and we spend lots of time outdoors. Now that the weather is warmer we are spending afternoons playing with his water table and plan to start going to splash pads and the pool now that they are open!

Dislikes: Having his face cleaned, when I leave the room, when Preston goes to work without saying goodbye and having toys taken from him. He also gets super upset when he gets bopped by other kids. We've had a few times lately where at story time or play dates he has gotten an elbow to the face or head butted, and he used to brush it off but lately it makes him way more sad (embarrassed, maybe?). He also hates the slide at swim class - so random, but he really, really does not like it!

Stats: We were at my mom's house a week ago and he was 24 lbs 8 oz (taken on her home scale). While he is still huge, I think that his weight gain has slowed down because he is moving all over the place now! He definitely seems to have grown taller too but we haven't measured him to confirm.

Eating: Still such a great eater, which I am forever thankful for. Lamb, egg yolk, avocados, bananas, cauliflower and sweet potatoes are favorites and are in regular rotation these days. Samuel loves feeding himself chunks of food but is still good about letting me give him some mashes (which I love because then I can add in probiotics, vitamins, etc). He eats three times a day and while he hasn't refused anything yet, he makes funny faces when he has mango and blueberries - I think he just isn't quite used to the sweetness? He also still breastfeeds several times during the day, we feed on demand so it is normally about 6 times a day. I am so thankful to be able to continue nursing him and I truly cherish that build-in daily bonding time with my little man.

Sleeping: We're still following the 2-3-4 wake time routine which works great for us. We've had some very early mornings lately (5 a.m.) which coupled with night waking has made for some very tired parents on several occasions. While Samuel has done a nine hour stretch a handful of times, most of the time he is up at least every four hours. This is definitely the hardest thing as a mom for me to deal with. Samuel puts himself to sleep great at the beginning of the night and for both of his naps but is not at all interested in doing that when he wakes up in the middle of the night. Oomph. On the bright side, our coffee is strong - and he is an awesome napper (usually napping around 8 a.m and 12:30 for 75 minutes each)!

Personality: The absolute goofiest, sweetest, happiest boy in the world. He of course, has his moments like any baby, but the vast majority of the time he is such a little joy. Like I mentioned above, he thinks it is the best to make funny faces to get Preston and I to smile and laugh. He is very social with older kids and adults and wants to have conversations with everybody. He is a big talker - constantly babbling and making tons of funny sounds. He gets very excited about things and does the cutest high pitch squeal - I have got to get better about getting things on video! We continue to get comments about how happy Samuel is and we are so thankful for his joyful, silly demeanor. It really is just the most incredible thing to be a parent and watch your beautiful newborn turn into a toddler with a big, distinct personality right in front of your eyes!

Firsts: Pulling up on everything! And into absolutely everything! I will turn my head for one second while making breakfast and Samuel will be in another room trying to open a baby-locked cabinet. The best first is definitely the silly faces he has been making to get us to laugh. He has also been emulating sounds more, and while he still says mama all the time we are starting to hear some other word-like babbles like baby. First time going to a baby yoga story time class (which Samuel thought was the greatest thing ever, probably because he has a not-so-secret crush on the adorable teacher). I am sure there are so many more - he is learning new things everyday so it is hard to remember it all! Samuel also got to meet his first dog! We picked out the puppy, Lyla, that we are going to be bringing home very soon.

Parents: This month has been awesome as parents. Preston and Samuel get closer everyday - they can sit at the breakfast table and make goofy faces at each other for ten minutes straight, it is hilarious. I love my days with Samuel, we have so much fun together and this age is such a great one for exploring and doing activities. Within a week and a half we are going to have a puppy and soon Samuel will be walking so I am just really trying to savor this sweet, calm time in our lives.
